Coffee is a wonder of nature and mankind has long been a user of this traditional beverage, creating many techniques to bring out the flavour in so many different ways. Roasting coffee beans has been happening for thousands of years, while Europeans developed novel ways to prepare coffee; enter espresso. There is one common denominator – all coffee species grow well at high altitudes and there are plenty of regions in South America, Asia, South America and Southeast Asia where premium coffee is grown.

If we take a look at coffee species, there are four main species, which are:

  1. Arabica – This species has lower levels of caffeine, with a slightly sweeter flavour. This bean must be grown at high altitudes; Northern Thailand is a prime place for an arabica coffee plantation. Sample the กาแฟ โร บัส ต้า คั่ว, a leading Thai coffee supplier.
  2. Robusta – Most popular in Europe and the Middle East. It has a harsh, strong taste that is associated with the Middle East. It can taste rubbery and great care should be taken when brewing. The best robusta is single origin that can be found in the online coffee supplies store. Robusta has taken a back door to arabica, but in the past few years, this unique species has seen a revival.
  3. Liberica – Grown in very remote and rare plantations, with a woody, fruity taste. At the end of the 19th century, liberica became very popular, then the two World Wars limited global supply. Coffee experts often cite liberica as their favourite, although it is an acquired taste.
  4. Excelsa – Close in make-up to liberica, excelsa is grown primarily in Southeast Asia. Check out เมล็ด กาแฟ ยี่ห้อ ไหน ดี and educate yourself about coffee. Both light and dark beans are available from the online coffee supplier. This species is a firm favourite in Thailand and Laos.

The most popular is arabica, which is consumed by about 60% of the coffee-drinking population, while robusta is the other well-known species.
