Plant Era Protein

As a vegan athlete and avid gym-goer, I can attest that finding a plant-based protein powder that not only tastes good but has the proper amount of nutrients can be a serious struggle.  I’ve tried several, often turned off by the chalky texture or lack of flavor they hold, either that or they have a sadly low count for grams of protein.  You name it, I’ve tried it: pea, brown rice, hemp-based proteins, and more.  The only consistency is the grainy feeling left on your tongue, and the bland flavor you struggle to choke down.

When my mother asked me to review Plant Era Protein Powder I was optimistic, but held onto my reservations due to the dismal products I had previously used.  When the package arrived I was happy with the presentation.  Not only did I get four servings, but they provided me with two different flavors to try, as well as a brand new shaker bottle with great aesthetic properties.  The flavors were dark chocolate and strawberry basil.  While I often opt for chocolate protein powder, I’ve never tried fruity ones, let alone fruit and herbs mixed together.  I decided to give that one a try first. Go big or go home, right?

I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor.  The strawberry tasted authentic, not fake or overly sugary, and the basil flavor came through subtly, not overwhelmingly, but just the right amount to balance the sweetness of the strawberry and add another level of depth to the drink.  Never in my life did I expect myself to enjoy a strawberry basil protein powder, but my tastebuds sure did enjoy it.  After trying that one, I was excited to try the dark chocolate.  The cocoa added a delicious richness to the protein shake, and it had just the right amount of sweetness.  I liked it more than the strawberry basil, but only because I am such a fan of chocolate.

However, the best thing about Plant Era Protein Powder has to be the texture.  It is rich and creamy without being too heavy.  It isn’t the slightest bit grainy or chalky, as many vegan protein powders can be.  Plus, one serving holds 21 grams of protein powder, which is more than several of its competitors.  Even better?  One serving holds 50% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin B12, the only thing I find I need to take a supplement for as a vegan.  There is also 35% of the daily recommended iron serving!  The blend of pea and brown rice protein they use allows for the texture to be spot on while giving great nutrients.  Overall, I was incredibly happy with their protein powders.  Not only do they hold loads of flavor, but the texture is top-notch, and the shaker is both cute and efficient.

Editor’s note: The reviewer did receive complimentary protein powder and shaker bottle, but that had no bearing on her opinion or review of the item.
